32-bit Windows cannot access a GPT partition, as you have found out. Personally, I'd try using a Live-CD version of Linux to copy the files you want to save, instead of what Nikolay is suggesting. Paragon GPT Loader lets 3TB drives work under Windows XP. 3, 2010 (3:35 pm) By: Matthew Humphries. Many users are continuing to use Windows XP instead of upgrading to Windows 7 mainly.

My laptop has gone for repairs with the manufacturer and I'm trying to access the data on it's hard drive using a hard drive docking station. The only issue is that the hard drive is a GPT partition and the Windows XP machine I'm using doesn't read GPT partitions. There's a few programs that will convert the drive from GPT to MBR so it will read in XP. However I'm worried that when I get my laptop back and put the hard drive back in I might have issues with the Windows 7 boot loader. Would converting to MBR temporarily and then back to GPT cause any issues? (Without data loss). Any other suggestions?

Any other suggestions? Paragon has a 3rd party driver that adds support for GPT on XP, but you need to buy a copy ($20 USD). Echoing J B L's post, I'd use a freely accessible live Linux distro (Ubuntu perhaps), boot into it, it should auto detect, mount any locally connected volumes and simply copy the files required to and from. Ubuntu may require the ntfs-3g driver to be installed should it fail to read any NTFS partitions. Mint Linux may have it installed by default, you could try that. In either case you need to install it, via your live desktop session, either go to Ubuntu System Synaptics Software Manager search for the above install.

Alternatively at the terminal (Requires an internet connection); sudo bash apt-get update && apt-get install ntfs-3g To detect your volumes; partprobe The Desktop should have a shadowed shortcut to your NTFS volume(s). Failing this, under the terminal; blkid (Look for a volume that's detected as 'ntfs' and device name, ie: /dev/sdb1) mount /dev/sdb1 /media On the Desktop, you should now have a shortcut to your NTFS volume. Or if you have/can borrow a copy of a Symantic Ghost Corporate v2.5 bot CD/USB, it's WinPE should support GPT. If you don't mind copying files/folders at the command prompt, it's another avenue.
